We only accept candidates who:
- Got A’s in school for the subjects they want to tutor
- Own a vehicle and hold a driver’s licence
- Live in Johannesburg, Pretoria or Cape Town

We match by location — in most cases, students will be in your vicinity. When we need you to travel far, you are compensated accordingly.
Team Meetings
You meet the whole team. We have weekly tutor meetings where you can discuss students and build friendships with the other tutors. We cater.
Student Screening
Before signing up, all Genius clients are put through a rigorous assessment — you are always safe going to tutor at their homes.
GI Training
Once inducted into the programme, we provide comprehensive training through our GI Training programme at our cost.

Frequently asked questions
What are the hourly rates?
Apply to find out — but you’ll find that they well outcompete any other tuition rates available in the industry. And we pay for learning materials, marking, and printing costs.
What subjects can I tutor?
Any — we provide a wide range of subjects to students, including Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, History, Accounting, Business Studies and many more. However, in addition to any secondary subjects, you are required to be able to tutor either Maths or English as a core subject.
Why do I need a vehicle? Can’t I get dropped off?
Many of our clientele are in estates that require private entry. We need to provide your permanent vehicle details for one entry and one exit per lesson — and for security reasons we cannot have another person waiting in the car while a lesson takes place.
I have no university qualification; can I still apply?
Yes, although you must be in the process of completing your undergrad.
How far do I have to drive?
We match you with students who are close to your home or university. In rare cases where you need to travel far, you will be compensated for the petrol.
Can I tutor full time?
Yes, we have a core of full-time tutors, but these are the GIs that have proven themselves over hundreds of hours. You will start as a part-time tutor.
Why do I have to take psychometrics before the interview?
These scholastic psychometric tests help us to determine if you have the verbal and non-verbal skills necessary to adapt to a student’s understanding of the work and build them up from there.
Can I tutor part time?
Yes, most of our tutors are part-time. We require that you commit to a minimum capacity of 6 lessons weekly — remember to factor in lesson preparation, communication with your EL, and the weekly syndicate.
Does Genius guarantee students?
Absolutely — once you have completed your training programme you will be started on a student caseload to match your availability.
I have a tight university schedule; can I still tutor for Genius?
If you can squeeze in a minimum of 6 one-hour lessons throughout the Monday–Sunday cycle, then yes.
Do qualified teachers still need to do the training?
Absolutely — our training programme prepares you for one-on-one tuition specifically.
Why must I come to the weekly tutor meeting?
The weekly meeting (there are weekend and weekday-evening options) is a must — but you’re going to enjoy it. We do student discussions, training, and team-building activities. You’re sure to make friends with like-minded individuals.
I have no previous tuition experience; can I still apply?
Yes. We provide comprehensive training if you pass our selection process.
What if I have weeks in the year that I cannot take lessons?
In circumstances where you cannot do any lessons, we provide substitutes and/or adapt your student schedule and load. All we require from you is two weeks’ written notice before you take leave.
I’m working for another tutoring company — why should I join Genius?

I’m not in Johannesburg, Pretoria or Cape Town. Can I tutor online?
Unfortunately not — Genius specialises in in-person training and tuition, and we only hire in-person candidates.
How time-flexible is the position?
Extremely. You will be able to tutor at times that suit your schedule.
What if the lessons do not fit into my schedule?
We match students based on your university or part-time work schedule. If it changes, we adapt your lesson schedule.
Are there company materials available for my use?
Yes, we provide lesson materials, textbooks, lesson practical kits, software, and material service subscriptions at our cost.
What if I need lesson material that Genius does not have in stock?
If you need something Genius doesn’t already have available in order to do your job better, the company will be sure to purchase it.
